Who To Ask for Wine Help in Supermarkets

Great Service — Know Who to Talk To

Jessica Altieri Wine ExpertWine TV takes you inside the supermarket with wine lifestyle host Jessica Altieri. Shopping for wine in supermarkets is not your average shopping trip to a pure wine store. One of the biggest obstacles that most wine lovers run into is finding the right guidance. Although you love wine and think you may know a lot about it, everyone needs the help of an expert every now and then. However, you also need to know who to talk to and what questions to ask.

Service and wine experts

If you go to the right wine lifestyle superstore, you will be able to seek the advice of a wine expert. However, there are subtle differences between the 2 principle types of wine experts. But most importantly, you need to know exactly what to ask.

A Wine Expert

A wine expert is just as the name suggests. Wine experts or stewards have knowledge of various wines, where they come from and what they would pair with food etc. However, their scope of knowledge stretches only to wine. In many restaurants, it is usually knowledge pertaining to the wine they serve.

A Sommelier

A sommelier focuses on a more detailed approach to wine. In fact, a sommelier is the highest attainable distinction in the wine and beverage industry. They know about the history of wine, how to select the right one and judge its quality, as well as the various drinking styles and etiquettes that go with said wine.

Their knowledge also stretches to spirits, beers and cigars. Furthermore, a sommelier, in contrast to a general wine expert, is more geared towards beverage management and serving.

Although both a wine expert and a sommelier will be able to help you make the right decision about your wine, a sommelier’s advice is usually preferred due to their practical knowledge and experience.

A Vital Question to Ask

What you have to ask any wine expert or sommelier is how long they have been in the industry. A fresh graduate will have expansive knowledge about various wines, where each wine type comes from and pairing ideas. However, when you are actually sitting in a restaurant, you should prefer someone with practical knowledge and longevity.

Seeking the recommendation and advice of a sommelier that has many years of experience will always give you the edge in picking the right wine. Even if a general wine expert’s advice is sought, always ask about their experience first. This will let you know how accurate their advice or recommendation is and be better in the long run.

In Case of No Service

Then again, having an expert at hand is not always possible. In most stores, there is usually a shortage of wine experts. This is especially true in smaller stores. This is why I recommend shopping at wine lifestyle superstores!

Do your Homework before you Get There

Before you go buying your wine, why not do some research? Call up your friends or family members, who have a lot of experience with wine, and ask them what wine you should actually buy. You may not get a detailed overview but something is better than nothing.

And If you can’t get a hold of a fellow wine lover, try surfing the internet and finding some information that way. The internet is a treasure trove of information and is the best way of finding what you need. You can find the opinion of a wine expert faster on the internet than you can at a wine lifestyle superstore, and they are constantly being updated. Regardless of how you do it, it pays to do your homework first (an age old methodology!)
