Negociants USA Australian Wine Tasting and Wine Channel TV in Chicago
Trendy restaurants and great wine go hand in hand, and that’s just what I experienced earlier this week. I visited Boka Restaurant in Chicago for a Negociants USA Boutique Icon wine event with the Heritage wine group, and tasted outstanding Australian wines with some of the Top Chicago wine enthusiasts around.
One of the pourers, Anthony, a friend of mine from a previous BYOB event, happened to be there and showed me one wine which was the highlight of my day, 2006 Giaconda Estate Chardonnay.
Giaconda Vineyard and Winery is in the foothills of Northeastern Victoria, Australia and within sight of the Victorian Alps. The vineyard was established by Rick Kinzbrunner, and the first release of Giaconda wines was in 1987, with the 1986 Chardonnay and the 1985 Cabernet blend.
Giaconda has received many accolades for their wines, particularly their Chardonnay, such as from Jancis Robinson who stated : “There are certainly Australian Chardonnays with a cult following. A prime example is Giaconda from the high Ovens Valley in Victoria, made in tiny quantities and difficult to run to earth. This is the sort of wine Americans call funky, i.e. far from the production-line technical perfection that is the Australian norm. It needs time to show it’s fascinating best”.
With it’s savoury Burgundian overtones, this 95 point rated wine by Wine Advocate was a delight and can be enjoyed for many years to come.
