Vina Los Vascos Chilean Wine, Lafite Rothschild and WineChannelTV in Chicago
Earlier this week I wondered how can one of the world’s most expensive wines, Grand Cru Lafite Rothschild, be available for under $20? Well, it sort of is…and in Chile !
Chilean based Vina Los Vascos is the Chilean wine product of Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite . Eric de Rothschild’s reasoning for purchasing this land in 1988 was quite simple, “We wanted to make a band-sized quantity of wine that was delicious to drink but very affordable.”
I met with Los Vascos Winemaker Marcelo Gallardo in Chicago at a Pasternak Wine Imports event. Marcelo had previously worked at Chile’s Viña Santa Rita and MontGras, before joining Los Vascos. Marcelo was in town briefly, before jet-setting to Miami, then back to Chile.
The tasting had an amazing lineup of wine ranging ranging from $10 all the way up to the special occasion wine, Le Dix. Marcelo chose to speak a bit about the 2006 while I was there, and notes how it is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Syrah with delightful violet, raspberry and dark berry notes. However, up until 2004 the wines were 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
After this tasting, it seemed to me as if Los Vascos really embodies the best of both new and old worlds in it’s wine, at a great value, and you can see this thru the video.
