New Zealand Wine Day, Sir George Fistonich of Villa Maria Estate and Wine TV
The winery was founded in 1961 by Sir George Fistonich, who is still the sole owner and Managing Director. Sir George has revolutionized the NZ wine industry, helping launch New Zealand’s first vineyard bar and restaurant, the two-tier structure for labelling their wines, and in 2005 he was named New Zealand’s Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
In 2009 Sir George received his greatest honour yet – a knighthood for his services to the New Zealand wine industry.
Sir george is one of the first early pioneers in the New Zealand wine industry and this has led Villa Maria to become New Zealand’s most awarded winery.
A Few awards they’ve earned include:
-Named one of the World’s 50 Great Wine Producers (by Wine Spectator 2004)
-New World Winery of the Year for 2007 (by Wine Enthusiast)
-Twice named New Zealand Wine Company of the Year
Most recently Villa Maria was named the ONLY New Zealand wine in a list of top 100 wines by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
Villa Maria is located on the north-east coast of the South Island in Marlborough enjoying sunny days, cooler nights and a long growing season making it ideal for Sauvignon blanc .
The Private Reserve Bin Sauvignon Blanc has bright crisp grassy aromas with notes of gooseberry, passionfruit and fresh citrus lime; followed by a delicious palate of juicy citrus flavors finishing with a refreshing crisp, clean acidity.
The wine would be a great pairing for a crisp green salad with grilled shrimp and tomatoes.
We are looking forward to New Zealand Wine Day and having Villa Maria Estates, Alastair Maling and their many outstanding wines join us!
