Villa Maria Estate in the Final Four

Drinks International magazine names Villa Maria as the fourth most-admired brand in the world.

Villa Maria Estate In Final Four with Wine TVWhen you make a Final Four, whether its March Madness NCAA Basketball or a worldwide list of the worlds most admired wine brands, it’s a big deal. Drinks International, an influential trade journal, ranked Villa Maria behind only Torres and Vega Sicilia of Spain, which ranked first and second, and Australia’s Penfolds, which ranked third.

Wine Channel TV and CEO Jessica Altieri have had the opportunity to meet with Sir George Fistonich, the Founder of Villa Maria Estate over the past few years and we’re thrilled at the success for the entire team.

The winery was founded in 1961 by Sir George Fistonich, who is still the sole owner and Managing Director.  Sir George has revolutionized the NZ wine industry, helping launch New Zealand’s first vineyard bar and restaurant, the two-tier structure for labelling their wines,  and in 2005 he was named New Zealand’s Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

Sir George is one of the first early pioneers in the New Zealand wine industry and this has led Villa Maria Estate to become New Zealand’s most awarded winery. A few awards they’ve earned include:
-Named one of the World’s 50 Great Wine Producers (by Wine Spectator 2004)
-New World Winery of the Year for 2007 (by Wine Enthusiast)
-Twice named New Zealand Wine Company of the Year
It’s always a treat to meet the people behind the wine and in this case, it’s no ordinary person and no ordinary wine. Sir George founded Villa Maria Estate in Auckland in 1961 and has driven the wine to become an award winner, both locally and overseas!
Cheers to the entire Villa Maria team!
