We had the pleasure of joining the ABC 7 Windy City Live team on for a wine segment on Boxed Wines. WCL hosts, Val Warner and Ryan Chiaverini were all set to participate in a blind tasting in the Battle of Box vs Bottle Wines.

Here is the rundown of the wines featured in a fun filled segment:

Wine Info:

SAUVIGNON BLANC

BOX: SILVER BIRCH – $18.99 – Binny’s
-This was rated a Wine Enthusiast Magazine best buy and comes from famed New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc winemaker Drew Ellis.
-The wine has delicious melon, mango and gooseberry notes, with a racy finish!
– Fresh seafood and oysters would be amazing with this wine.

BOTTLE: PALLISER ESTATE SAUVIGNON BLANC – $14.99 – Trader Joe’s
-This wine comes from the boutique winery Palliser Estate and winemaker Pip Goodwin, where they’re known for their eco-friendly practices and award winning wines.
– Bright lime, peach and passion fruit aromas are found in this wine, with citrus stone fruit flavors giving it a great vibrant balance!
-Try pairing with fresh grilled whitefish for a perfect pairing.

RIESLING

BOX: HARDY’S SOUTH EASTERN AUSTRALIA RIESLING- $7.99 – BINNY’S
-This South Eastern Australian Riesling is filled with bright lemon and lime aromas.
-It has a refreshing palate with a hint of orange blossom and is not overly sweet, making it a perfect pairing with your next Thai dish.

BOTTLE: YALUMBA SOUTH AUSTRALIAN RIESLING- $9.99 AT BINNY’S
-This elegant medium-bodied wine shows off dry, lemon, lime and grapefruit citrus flavors.
-It comes from one of Australia’s oldest family owned wineries with a 160 year old history.
-They actually planted the first vines by moonlight, and the name Yalumba means “All the land around.”
-Chicken salad and oysters would be a savory pairing with this Riesling.

Cabernet Sauvignon

BOX: BLACK BOX CABERNET SAUVIGNON – $21.99 – Binny’s
-This wine comes from California’s cool Central Coast, is full-bodied, smooth and easy-drinking!
-It’s filled with lovely blackberry and cinnamon aromas, and flavors of dark berry, dried cherry, vanilla and toasted oak notes. It recently won a gold medal at the San Diego International Wine Competition
– Try pairing with savory pork tenderloin.

BOTTLE: DECOY CABERNET SAUVIGNON – $21.99 – Binny’s
-This wine comes from the Duckhorn wine company and is filled with juicy blackberry and red cherry jam flavors
-It has a hint of sweet spicy toffee notes from the French oak barrels used.
-Enjoy with a seared sirloin steak for a perfect pairing! ZINFANDEL BOX: CARDINAL ZIN – 17.99 – BINNY’S
-This boxed California zinfandel wine is equivalent to 20 glasses of wine and claims 6 weeks of freshness after opening!
-It’s a full bodied zinfandel with brown sugar, mocha aromas, and jammy flavors of blackberry and oak.
-A delicious, zesty pairing with bbq ribs!

BOTTLE: ST. FRANCIS OLD VINES ZINFANDEL- 15.99- BINNY’S
– This Sonoma County wine comes from “old vines” giving it its intense jammy flavor. This plump zinfandel is filled with black cherry, black pepper and delicious raspberry notes. Try it with your next BBQ lamb chops or char grilled burgers!
