Named the 2007 New Zealand Winemaker of the Year, George Geris has gained a world-wide knowledge and skills for wine-making from Europe to South Africa to Oceania in order to produce some of the finest wines in the Hawkes Bay Region as the Chief Marlborough Winemaker at the Villa Maria vineyard. At a wine tasting and Masterclass hosted by Complexity New Zealand Fine Wine in Chicago, Wine Channel TV, www.winechanneltv.tv Media Host, Jessica Altieri chatted with George about one of Villa Maria’s top wines; their Hawkes Bay Reserve Cabernet Merlot. Grown in the Gimblett Gravels region of Hawkes Bay, this is one of the best regions to produce red wines in all of New Zealand. After a sip of the Reserve Cabernet Merlot, you will discover the wine’s deep and spicy notes of red plum and sweet black current (often referred to as cassis), thyme, cedar spices, and even roasted coffee beans. Despite the different and spicy notes, the Reserve Cabrenet Merlot is quite fine.
George enjoys applying the mix of old world patience and wisdom he’s learned from his travels with the bounty on offer from our unique New Zealand growing conditions. He’s been working with grapes from the Marlborough region since 1997 and loves the challenge of developing them into world class wines every year. George has been a nominee in the Winestate New Zealand Winemaker of the Year Award a number of times and won the award in 2007.
